The FOR marking is a new environmental marking for packaging made of wood that is mandatory in Italy from January 1, 2023. The marking aims to protect the environment and promote the recycling of packaging materials. The marking is based on the internationally recognized ISO standard 14021, which establishes different recycling codes for different materials.
The FOR marking applies to all types of packaging made of wood, such as crates, boxes, pallets, plywood, chipboard or fiberboard. The marking must be affixed on the packaging itself or on a label that cannot be easily removed. The marking must be clearly visible and readable and must not be confused with other information.
The FOR marking means that the packaging made of wood consists of at least 50% recycled material. This means that the wood was either obtained from waste or from secondary raw materials. The goal is to reduce the consumption of natural resources and promote the circular economy.
We recommend two different branding irons for the FOR-50 marking.

Yes, there is an exception rule for transport packaging that is used for B2B transport. These are packaging that only serve to transport products between companies and do not reach the end consumer. For these packaging, it is sufficient to indicate the recycling code FOR 50 in the transport documents or digital documents. This means that EPAL-EURO pallets do not necessarily have to be marked on the pallets themselves if the code appears in the accompanying papers.
This exception rule is intended to facilitate the adaptation of companies to the new marking requirement and avoid unnecessary costs. However, companies must ensure that the transport packaging actually meets the requirements of the FOR marking and that they can provide the appropriate evidence.
The legal basis for the FOR marking in Italy is the Legislative Decree No. 116/2020, which was issued on September 3, 2020. The Legislative Decree has made the environmental marking for packaging of products mandatory, which are delivered to the end consumer in Italy, for a fee or free of charge. Primary, secondary and possibly also tertiary packaging must be marked.
The Legislative Decree is based on Directive 94/62/EC on packaging and packaging waste, which was implemented in Italy by Law No. 152/2006. The Legislative Decree aims to protect the environment and promote the recycling of packaging materials. The marking requirement also aims to improve the transparency and information of consumers.
